DNA-testing strategy

The sequencing of the dog genome in 2005 marked the start of a rapid development of genetic tests for various conditions in dogs. These tests offer new possibilities, but also new challenges in the breeding of dogs.

Issues related to application of genetic tests have been frequently discussed in the Scientific Committee of the Nordic Kennel Union, NKU/VK. In 2015, the committee compiled information and guidelines regarding the use of genetic tests in a policy document. These guidelines have also been approved by the FCI Breeding Committee.

NKU/VK would like to stress that genetic testing in dogs should be used with common sense and caution. The information and policy of the NKU/VK regarding the use of genetic tests in dog breeding should serve as a guide for breeders and dog owners in the Nordic countries.
