Jordbruksverket – information on bringing dogs from abroad

Please note that:

• It is prohibited to keep or own wolf hybrids in Sweden.
• It is prohibited to keep or breed dogs that are considered particularly prone to aggressive behaviour.

EU citizens who will travel with more than five dogs

The following is not applicable to owners/dogs travelling to Sweden with dogs from outside the EU. Nor to commercial transporters.

The following only applies if you are a private citizen who:

1. travels from another country in the European Union to Sweden 
2. will attend a dog show or similar competition 
3. will bring more than five dogs 

Then you can get an exemption from the normal EU regulation related to traveling with more than five dogs.

Note! All four of the listed requirements below must be fulfilled for you to qualify for the exemption. Otherwise, you will not be able to cross the border into Sweden based on the exemption from the normal EU regulation.

• All the dogs in the vehicle must be older than six months.
• All of the dogs must be travelling to participate in the dog show.
• The owner must be able to verify that all dogs will be participating in the dog show*.
• The dogs must either be travelling with the owner whose name is listed in the dog’s passport, or within five days of the travel of said owner. This means that it is mandatory for the owner of the dog to also travel to the dog show and to do so within five days before or five days after the dog. The person who is transporting the dog on the dog owner’s behalf must have a power of attorney as well as be able to show proof that the owner will travel within the stated five-day period (could be a copy of a ticket).

*Ways to verify that the dogs will participate in a dog show:

- Proof of entry
- Proof of payment
- Confirmation from the organizer that the dog has been entered, such as document with entry number and dog’s name for identification
- Catalogue with dogs’ names – (not applicable here as catalogues aren’t published in advance)

If you are travelling from a country that is eligible for TRACES you will need the following information:

• Facility number/TRACES number: SE358979

Upon arrival dogs must be declared in The Swedish customs.

For EU citizens travelling from another EU country, information that the dog will be entering Sweden may be done, free of charge, digitally in advance:

1. Have your dog's passport ready when filling out the digital form: Report that you are entering Sweden with a pet dog or cat
2. When you have successfully filled out the form and received confirmation, you may choose the “Nothing to declare”-line at the customs. However, be prepared to show the confirmation number upon request.

If you are travelling to Sweden from outside of the European Union, please specifically check the entry requirements for your country.
