New rules for bringing dogs to Sweden
The rules for travelling with dogs to Sweden have been tightened as of 22 April 2026. Here is a simple overview to help you prepare your trip and avoid issues at the border.

New rules for travelling with multiple dogs
If you are travelling privately with more than five dogs, you must be able to show that all dogs are participating in a competition, exhibition or training for such an event.
- In addition to the pet passport, you must bring written proof that the animals are registered with ID numbers to take part in the event, or that they are registered with an organisation that arranges such events. Examples of valid documents include a current exhibition or competition catalogue, or pedigrees from, for example, a kennel club within the FCI—provided that the animals’ ID numbers are included.
- If you are bringing a dog that will not participate in the event, check with the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket) for the applicable requirements.
If the requirements are not met
If the documentation is incorrect or missing, this may have serious consequences:
- The dog may be denied entry into Sweden
- The dog may be placed in quarantine (costs are paid by you as the owner)
- In the worst case, the dog may be euthanised
You, as the animal owner or importer, are always responsible for ensuring that all requirements are met.
How to prepare
Make sure you find out what applies well in advance of your trip. The easiest way is via the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s e-service:
